Poet, member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, translator, publicist.
Was born in 1821 into the family of an old noble family known since the reign of Ivan the Terrible.
Maykov was brought up with a love of literature and art. After graduating from the law school of St. Petersburg University, he published his first poetry collection and dedicated it to his mother. Maykov was fond of ancient poetry, especially Homer and Horace, and was a good translator of European poetry - Goethe, Longfellow, Mitskevich and others.
He worked in the monthly magazine "Novoye Slovo" and weekly "Theatralnaya Gazeta", published in St. Petersburg. He was also a member of the council of the Russian literary society. He was an honorary member of the Standing Committee on the organization of public readings in St. Petersburg and its suburbs, and an associate member of the publishing society of this committee.
He died 8 (20) March 1897.
